All Children Deserve to Feel Safe and Loved

It  Should Never Hurt to Be A Child

11 children a day die from abuse  and neglect in America....

That's around 4000 a year

The Susan Staniford Adams Memorial To Prevent Child Abuse

Through the Exchange Club of Tacoma Foundation

  My friend, Jane Adams Fister, lost her daughter Susan on Thanksgiving Day, 1989, as the result of a car accident.  To honor Susan's memory, Jane established this memorial fund. The proceeds are used for the prevention of child abuse because Susan, who wanted to be a lawyer when she grew up, believed in "justice" and "what was right."  Reaching out to other children in stopping abuse will fulfill Susan's life work, because she will be making "what is right" happen for other children.

Using the picture from a 2nd grade Mother's Day card drawn by Susan, Phyllis Edelbrock, a first grade teacher, created a poster and T-shirts.  I became involved in the project right after its inception, and I have knit pillows, blankets, sweaters and doll clothes using Susan's drawing.

During the month of April, 1999,  which was Child Abuse Prevention Month, the Tacoma Mall Nordstroms provided space in their store for us to display and sell our products, some of which are shown here.  We were invited back in April, 2000.

This page is dedicated to the prevention of child abuse, and the message that ALL CHILDREN DESERVE TO BE SAFE AND LOVED.

GOODNIGHT TEDDY

Teddy, I've been bad again,
My Mommy told me so;
I'm not quite sure what I did wrong,
But I thought that you might know.

When I woke up this morning,
I knew that she was mad;
Cause she was crying awful hard,
And yelling at my dad.

I tried my best to be real good,
And do just what she said;
I cleaned my room all by myself,
I even made my bed.

But I spilled milk on my good shirt,
When she yelled at me to hurry;
And I guess she didn't hear me,
When I told her I was sorry.

Cause she hit me awful hard, you see,
And called me funny names;
And told me I was really bad,
And I should be ashamed.

When I said, "I love you, Mommy,"
I guess she didn't understand;
Cause she yelled at me to shut my mouth.
Or I'd get smacked again.

So I came up here to talk to you,
Please tell me what to do;
Cause I really love my Mommy,
And I know she loves me, too.

And I don't think my Mommy means,
To hit me quite so hard;
I guess sometimes, grown ups forget.
How really big they are.

So Teddy, I wish you were real,
And you weren't just a bear;
Then you could help me find a way.
To tell Mommies every where.

To please try hard to understand.
Cause the outside pain soon goes a way,
But the inside never heals.

And if we could make them listen,
Maybe then they'd understand;
So other children just like me,
Wouldn't have to hurt again.

But for now, I guess I'll hold you tight,
And pretend the pain's not there;
I know you'd never hurt me,
So Goodnight, Teddy Bear.

Safe and Loved Knits

These are some of the items in the "Safe and Loved" line.

The design is knit using fairisle and intarsia techniques.  The bedspread is knit separately and attached.  The bedposts are I cords.  The little pillow on the bed has embroidered flowers, and the girl and her mother's heads are knit and stuffed to give a 3D effect to the figures.  Yellow yarn is used to create their "hair."
